The UMD Black Belt Club prides itself in providing Maryland students with a space where all martial arts are welcome and accepted. Students of all experience levels come together to learn and train with each other, fulfilling whatever goals they may have, whether it's training for a tournament, or hanging out with friends that like to punch things.
Mission
The Club was founded by Yun Lung Yang and Essi Najafi in the fall of 2000 in order to create a comprehensive and modern training space for martial artists. Instead of traditional methods of training that involve strict repetition and narrow viewpoints, club members are encouraged to learn from any martial arts style they wish. There are no ranks or predetermined curricula, just knowledgeable instructors and many students ready to teach and learn. Students come in when they want, and train how they want.

There are no superiority complexes or judgment. That's what I like about this club, it really gives respect to the martial arts."

Engaging the Community
Black Belt Club is proud to serve the University Recreation and Wellness Division, as well as the full University of Maryland Community. One of the best ways the club achieves this goal is by conducting workshops on personal defensive skills for various organizations, as well as the for the general student body. In addition, the club looks to further the community's appreciation for the martial arts through shows and demonstrations that show off the skills of its various members. The club also seeks to collaborate with other RecWell martial arts clubs. With the club's unique position as an interdisciplinary martial arts organization, BBC is always looking for other martial artists to collaborate with and learn from. Well, the martial arts can definitely provide an excellent workout for those willing to train hard enough. This club does offer a somewhat casual environment, but you can always find some motivated people willing to welcome you to their workouts at open practice. Coupled with group warm-ups and dedicated weekly strength training (all optional), there is definitely fitness to be had.
